Half Day Snorkel Trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley

Half Day Snorkel Trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley

Hol Chan means little channel in Mayan and is a natural break on the barrier reef where ocean depth ranges from three to thirty feet. Here we will enjoy seeing the breathtaking myriad of marine life and huge coral garden, among which are flourishing stag horn corals and sea fans. Shark Ray Alley is a shallow water snorkel where we will enjoy swimming with the harmless nurse sharks and southern stingrays. This sanctuary was officially established in 1987 and since then the return of all species of fish has been quite dramatic. Due to its protected status, what was once a depleted fishing area has now been allowed to re-generate, producing a quite colorful fish spectacle.

We will travel back in time, follow pathways used by the Maya peoples, and discover lost worlds that have been hidden deep within the jungle for centuries. We will take a tour as our guide unveils the mysteries and secrets of the Maya underworld. We will witness spectacular visions of the jungle while trekking across rivers and remote jungle trails. We will go back over two thousand years in history as we learn about the Maya civilization and witness first hand how the ancient peoples used these amazing caverns. We will see burial chambers with calcified remains, ceremonial vessels and other cultural artifacts left by the Maya centuries ago. Artifacts are often looted from caves following their discovery. The passage through this cave is known to only a few select guides, who have permission from the Belize Department of Archeology to take visitors to this special cave. To this day, the cave has not been looted and nearly all of the cultural artifacts have remained in place as they were originally found in 1989. We will start off the day with an early flight to Belize City to meet and greet our tour guide. We will travel the scenic western highway towards Guatemala to the village of Teakettle. From there we will head south to the Tapir Mountain Nature. We will take a nature trail for forty-five minutes on a flat, clean, and shaded path which has three knee-deep streams to cross during this jungle hike. At the end of the hike we will arrive at the camp ground just outside the cave. We will sit down for lunch and orientation about the history, geology, safety rules, and regulations of the cave. After the orientation and lunch, we will start off with a swim in the fifteen foot long and fifteen foot deep cave; life jackets are available for non-swimmers. We will arrive to the main chamber to view artifacts such as ancient Mayan potteries, skeletal remains, stone tools, and beautiful formations.

Our experienced tour guide also provides a detailed and informative briefing on all of the artifacts. The tour covers approximately five to eight of the Lamanai Maya Temples. While touring this site, huge masks depicting dead rulers and gods seem to materialize out of the rainforest amid the chatter of bird life and the haunting call of the Howler monkeys.
